The Graham McKenna-Mayes Memorial Fund was established to honour the life and legacy of local businessman Graham McKenna-Mayes and to support widening participation in higher education.

Launched by Graham’s family and close friends, the fund aims to help talented students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds realise their academic potential at The University of Manchester.

It particularly focuses on supporting students from the Greater Manchester area who are choosing to study Law or Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES).

Eligibility

Each year, the fund provides an annual £2,000 grant to eligible applicants. These bursaries are designed to help students overcome financial barriers to studying at Manchester and to act as a first stepping-stone towards building a successful career after graduation.

Students do not need to submit an application to be considered – those who meet the eligibility criteria are automatically assessed and contacted if allocated a bursary.

Remembering Graham

Graham McKenna-Mayes was known for his intellect, drive and his commitment to mentoring others. Growing up in Bury, he pursued his own academic path into law before going on to a successful career in business leadership. Those who knew him describe him as someone who was happiest when helping others to be their best – a spirit that lives on in this memorial fund.

As a member of the Greater Manchester community who valued both legal and environmental fields, this bursary serves as a fitting tribute, recognising students who share Graham’s interests and ambitions.

The University of Manchester is committed to widening access and ensuring that higher education is accessible to students from all backgrounds. Through bursaries like the Graham McKenna-Mayes Memorial Fund, we continue to break down barriers and support students to thrive both during their studies and beyond.
