What we do
The team lead on communications and engagement, both externally and internally within the School, Faculty and University taking responsibility for alumni engagement, social media, press releases, and media campaigns focussing on research, news and achievements to raise the profile of the School.
The Engagement & External Relations Team help organise and promote annual public lectures and impactful events.

Director of Engagement & External Relations, Professor Claire McGourlay
Responsible for leading the further development and ongoing implementation of the School strategy for external relations, to develop and maintain a sustainable network of external partnerships, including the School’s alumni community. Claire works with School Senior Leadership Team, Business Engagement and Internationalisation leads as well as the Director of Teaching, Learning and Students and Social Responsibility.

Director of Social Responsibility, Phil Drake
Phil Drake oversees the implementation of the University’s third Core Objective (Social Responsibility) in the School of Social Sciences and chairs the School’s Social Responsibility Committee. He is also the Director of the Justice Hub at The University of Manchester, which incorporates such projects as the Legal Advice Centre, Manchester Free Legal Help Scheme and the Manchester Innocence Project.

Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Claire Fox
As the Director of EDI, Claire has responsibility for driving forward the School’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity within the workplace. Claire works closely with the School’s EDI Committee, Senior Leadership Team, the Faculty of Humanities EDI group, the University’s EDI team, and other groups within the University to develop the School’s equality, diversity and inclusion priorities and activities, including the continuing implementation of our Athena Swan Bronze award action plan.

Business Engagement Lead, Ruby Hammer
Business Engagement is an important area of work carried out by social sciences at the University of Manchester. We regard it to be much wider than business liaison. Our work extends to third sector organisations, promotion of alumni projects and funding as well as the full range of consultancy and CPD opportunities. A wide range of world leading researchers and scholars can support the growth of innovation as well as helping to provide answers to some of the world’s most challenging issues. Primarily works on projects related to further enhancing internal and external communications (including website updates and day-to-day social media) and event planning and liaison with both internal stakeholders and external organisations. Responsible for monitoring and reporting impact by keeping a record of analytics.
