International Financial Law LLM
Why did you choose this course at The University of Manchester Law School?
After intense research I realised that The University of Manchester Law School had every single factor I was looking for my postgraduate experience: A unique combination of excellence, a worldwide reputation, a multicultural environment and a strategic location in terms of financial development opportunities.
What do you most enjoy about studying here?
I enjoy the vibrant atmosphere The University of Manchester offers to all its students. We have at our disposal a huge list of facilities, resources and activities in order to make the most of our experience, not only the academic aspects.
What has been the highlight of your course so far?
I'd definitely say the highlight of my course has been the opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of the history of the top global financial centres, informed by experienced and truly passionate academics.
Have you been involved in any of the Law societies and events?
I am currently a Student Representative for my LLM stream, which I think is a great opportunity to get to know my fellow students from a different angle and also to enhance leadership skills by representing the collective interests of the stream.
What aspects of your learning experience have you benefitted from in pursuing your future career?
I would say that the high academic standards and the scale of value the Law department teach us will always be a reminder of how to perform in professional scenarios. In my case, I am really grateful for everything I have learned so far because even though I had the opportunity to gain some work experience in my country, I do not doubt I will come back to the field as a more critical, committed and qualified professional.
Is there one valuable experience that you will take away that you could only have experienced at Manchester?
Well, I actually had the most valuable experience before arriving to Manchester: Being the recipient of a scholarship, awarded by the generous Law School. I cannot put into words how life changing has been this opportunity and how grateful I feel with this institution for contributing to my growth as a professional.
What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you feel studying at Manchester has prepared you?
Taking into account the historical moment my country is going through, I would like to play an active role in building peace from the financial development angle. I consider every growing society needs fully committed professionals in order to achieve significant results and the Colombian case is not the exception. Thanks to The University of Manchester, I have learned how strong financial schemes work and the importance of being ethical in this industry. I am looking forward to transferring this valuable learning and these good practices to the society I come from.
What advice would you give to new Law students at Manchester?
At first, I would tell them how lucky they are to belong to one of the best ranked universities in the world and would advise them to make the most of this experience in all the ways possible. I would encourage them to take advantage of the multicultural society they are going to step into because this is definitely a “once in a lifetime” opportunity that will change the way they see life from now on.
