My current role and how I got there

I chose the University of Manchester for its well-renowned facilities which would aid me in my studies, for example, their libraries, career support system and resources that would make my studies easier. UoM ranks highly for Law both within the UK and internationally, so it has helped me network with potential employers.

Being from Bradford meant that Manchester was also close to home. Finally, the city is amazing and there is so much to do. One day will never be the same as another, and you have many societies and clubs that you can join. This meant that making friends became easier.

My experience at Manchester

I have always wanted to be a solicitor and coming to Manchester has made that decision easier. The modules are varied and well taught, which meant that I got to learn about things that I wouldn’t have normally picked or have an interest in. Surprisingly, they ended up being my favourite modules!

How did your course set you up for your career path?

The course is well organised, and it allows you to expand your knowledge but also lets you have a firm route if that is what you want. For example, I knew I wanted to be a solicitor, but it wasn’t until I had my Contract Law module that I realised I wanted to be a commercial lawyer. Once again, the modules are extensive, so you are not tied down to one route. Everyone is able to have their own journey on this course.

Besides this, there is an excellent Law Society that hosts and invites many law firms and speakers. This is in addition to the course leaders inviting different types of speakers to talk to students. There is so much to learn!

My most surprising takeaway would be the skills that I have learnt on this course. I don’t believe I can say that I would have been the same individual or hold the same skillset I have now, had I gone to another university.

Law has taught me organisational, analytical and critical skills. I was not surprised by how demanding the course was but the help I received from my tutors enabled me to develop the relevant skills to tackle the course.

My advice for future students

My advice would be ‘prepare to be shocked.’ This is not in a bad way. University life is different, and it is independent. Stay on top of your reading but make sure to have fun. Join a society, make new friends, and try something you wouldn’t otherwise have attempted.

It is a learning curve for all of us.
