Law students from Canada

"It is advantageous that the study of law in the UK is similar to Canada due to the common law heritage." Adeena Mohammed, Law LLB student

Every year the University of Manchester welcomes a new cohort of students from Canada, many of whom choose Manchester to study at the School of Law because of its reputation, location and inclusive culture.

The School of Law has been welcoming Canadian students for many years, thanks to the parallels between the study of law here in the UK and in Canada. As well as gaining a transferrable degree from Manchester, Canadian students find Manchester easy to navigate, friendly, cosmopolitan and bursting with opportunity for exploring the UK and Europe while living here.

What do you need to qualify as a lawyer in Canada?

In the UK, you do not have to have a University degree before embarking on a law degree, allowing you to apply straight out of high school.

Upon completing your Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Manchester, Canadian graduates must be assessed by the National Committee on Accreditation in order to qualify for bar membership in any Canadian province or territory. You must then complete the Bar Admission Course for your province in Canada.

Meet our students

Adeena Mohammed, Law LLB student

My student experience so far has been really great. I was nervous about moving to a new country and leaving all of my family and friends behind, but Manchester has been extremely welcoming. Activities during orientation week are helpful to get acquainted with the city and meet new people. When I first started my course, I realised everyone else was trying to figure it all out just like me and that made the transition a lot less daunting.

Another major reason I decided to study in the UK was that I was able to enter law school straight out of high school, whereas in Canada I’d have to get an undergraduate degree first. It is advantageous that the study of law in the UK is similar to Canada due to the common law heritage. The School of Law at the University of Manchester has a great reputation and incredible connections with leading law firms. However, it was the course structure and content of the LLB programme that ultimately influenced my decision to choose it as my firm choice. The combination of formal lectures and seminars appealed to my contrasting learning styles.

Studying in the UK as an international student can be quite expensive from visa costs, to accommodation and of course, tuition.  When deciding on my firm choice, the fact that the School of Law offered merit-based scholarships to international students really stood out to me. I appreciated the fact that there was tremendous international student support not just in the form of funding, but initiatives such as Manchester Calling and the Student Immigration Team. The best thing about Manchester is that you’ll never be bored because there’s always something to do. One thing I had to learn very quickly while living here is you have to stick your hand out for the bus to stop for you! It seems silly and now it’s very obvious, but it wasn’t something I had to do in Canada! There’s also a ton of different food options for international students missing home or any foodie!

After I graduate, I plan to return to Canada to complete my accreditation exams and practise law.
