Our Legal Advice Centre offers a unique experience while you study Law at Manchester - to develop practical skills in offering pro bono legal advice in real legal cases.
Under the supervision of a qualified solicitor or barrister, you will meet a client, research their case and prepare advice for them.
Volunteering at the Legal Advice Centre is a great way to not only develop your practical legal skills but also show future employers your commitment to the legal profession and social responsibility, which can really make you stand out when applying for jobs.
Typical clinics
Regular clinics are held in:
- consumer rights;
- employment law;
- environmental law;
- family law;
- landlord and tenant law;
- mental incapacity law;
- advice to small businesses;
- wills and probate.
If there is a particular area you are interested in developing further, you can volunteer for relevant clinics to further develop your knowledge.
We also run drop-in clinics at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre in family, housing and immigration law, where you can attend with a solicitor and observe on the spot legal advice.
About the Legal Advice Centre
Our Legal Advice Centre provides free, strictly confidential legal advice to members of the public (including University staff and students).
Work at the Centre is sponsored by Linklaters, Eversheds and Clyde & Co solicitors.
We have more than 100 solicitors and local barristers on our rota.
We are also a Clinic of LawWorks, the national charity for pro bono legal advice.
Our work has been awarded the Advice Quality Standard quality mark for an advice service.
