My current role and how I got there

I currently work at Bond, the UK network for organisations working in international development. Bond connects, strengthens, and champions a dynamic network of civil society organisations to eradicate global poverty, inequality and injustice.

My role is to coordinate Bond’s working groups which brings together members to discuss challenges, share resources, undertake joint advocacy and influence policymaking around key thematic areas in the development and humanitarian sector.

I became aware of international development due to a module I studied at university which explored the ongoing global challenges of eradicating poverty and injustice and critically analysed the Western-led programme's and institutions that seek to achieve this.

Studying anthropology gave me skills in critical thinking, a broad knowledge of various cultures, communication and analysis skills. The course also encouraged me to extend my perspective beyond the familiar to view things from the perspective of others which has been invaluable to my career.

My experience at Manchester

I visited an open day with my mum and immediately fell in love with the energy of the city and University. Anthropology at University of Manchester has an excellent reputation as one of the best in the country, which was a huge draw.

Studying anthropology gave me a new lens through which to view the world. Almost 10 years later, I still approach life with a holistic perspective, an understanding that various aspects of human nature, language, politics and social structures are inherently interrelated.

My advice for future students

If you’re curious and keen to understand the world and people around you, anthropology is probably the course for you! Manchester is a vibrant and exciting city, and the University is full of opportunities.
