After a brief internship in FinTech I moved to strategy consulting at Analysys Mason, As an Associate Consultant, I work on some of the biggest deals in the telecoms industry across the globe by offering support in data collection, financial modeling and forecasting.

I originally had totally different career plans, but during my time at the University I found economics modules to be extremely exciting, for this reason, I decided to devote all my optional modules to subjects related to economics and management. My experience as treasurer of a student society also gave me a grasp of real-life business management, which was pivotal in my decision to pursue a career in consulting.

My Experience at Manchester

I originally chose to study at UoM because of its large international student body and its academic reputation. At the time, Manchester had just announced its Campus Masterplan, and the idea of growing personally and professionally in an environment which was growing itself seemed extremely exciting to me.

In many respects, my course at university was a preview of what my work-life would be like without having the high pressure typical of a job. The high quality of work that professors expect significantly resembles the demands that clients have in the workplace, the difference being that during my course, I had the support of staff and supervisors along the way to make sure I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.

The highly international student body that made up my course meant that team projects were both an occasion to learn the subject matter of the course, as well as how to cooperate with people from different cultures. The team dynamics I learnt studying with international students are still extremely useful now, as I work with people from all over the world.

What I learnt from my course

I think the most important takeaway from my course, was understanding that whatever the topic you are discussing there are several perspectives that people may have on it, without one being superior to the other. Being able to recognise that people may have a different view on something, enables you to avoid confrontation and build a more cooperative environment, which is fundamental to cope with any disagreement that may arise in either a business meeting or a more trivial discussion.

My advice for future students

My advice to prospective students is to make the most of what the University offers. The University of Manchester organises a lot of initiatives for the whole student body, joining as many as possible allows you to complement your studies with experiences that make life at University more enjoyable and that are extremely useful to develop soft and social skills.
