As an instructor, I have conducted Data Analytics lectures and boot camps in both Tanzania and the United Kingdom. My enthusiasm for sharing data knowledge with the community was heightened by my mother, Juliana Lema, who is a teacher and a constant source of inspiration.

As a Data professional, I provide Data Science and Analytics services to clients utilizing data to address complex business challenges. The MSc in Data Science program at the University of Manchester has equipped me with essential skills and the ability to think critically when solving problems.

I am deeply grateful for the Equity and Merit scholarship at the University which played a crucial role in supporting my academic journey in Manchester.

As a kid growing up in Tanzania, I always wanted to be a pilot. Every time I took a flight, I used to be that kid who would go directly to the pilots’ area and just chat with them. I found the whole idea of flying both domestic and international flights to be intriguing.

When the field of Data Science emerged significantly, I was impressed by the idea of using AI to solve complex problems. This made me shift my journey towards exploring new possibilities and seeking the right academic qualifications along the way.

My MSc in Data Science at the University of Manchester equipped me with a strong academic background, practical skills, and beneficial professional networks. In addition to giving me the skills I needed, my time at the University of Manchester also allowed me to network with experts in the field of data science both within and outside the academic setting.

My career has evolved significantly because of my MSc in Data Science at The University of Manchester. I am now equipped with a thorough understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and real-world applications of Data Science.

My knowledge of the tools and approaches necessary to implement a data project has strengthened, covering everything from machine learning algorithms, data cleaning, and pre-processing to data visualization techniques.

My experience at Manchester

I chose to study at the University of Manchester because of its reputation in fostering innovation and delivering tailored solutions to the biggest challenges globally. The university is part of the Russell group of Universities in the UK with a very high research intensity and as a person who dreamt of being a Data Scientist, I was impressed with how the University of Manchester was and continues to be a pioneer in AI and robotics, as in 2021 the University was named as a European centre for leading AI research.

The teaching of MSc Data Science at Manchester is through a work-related context, which was essential to enable me to learn from industry Data Science experts. During my time at University, I was able to work with one of the leading UK defence companies in collaboration with the University in a project to detect the presence of ships in satellite images using AI and deep learning.

The most surprising takeaway from my course was the steep learning curve and tight schedule during my early days at the University.

Navigating through the demanding academic environment taught me the importance of managing my time effectively, setting priorities, and reaching out to both instructors and fellow colleagues for assistance when needed. These skills have proved invaluable in my life, aiding me not only in academic pursuits but also in various professional and personal endeavours.

My advice for future students

I would advise students who are considering pursuing an MSc in Data Science to attend University Open Days if possible and online events organised by the University for prospective students. These events give you a great chance to get familiar with the different services and resources the university provides, as well as to become familiar with the University’s culture.

On open days you will be able to explore the campus, get to know instructors, and learn more about the academic setting. It’s also an opportunity to network with current students, get information, and ask questions to help determine if the University and the MSc Data Science program fit your expectations and goals.

In addition, the University of Manchester was my choice due to its reputation in diversity and inclusion. The University and the city made me feel at home and welcomed and was known for its ambition to establish a diverse, equitable and community-focused workplace and learning environment that is welcome to all.
