Title

Multilevel Modelling of the Biomarker Cortisol: Changes over the Life Course and association with Stressful Jobs.

PhD summary

In the current way of life of our society, there are different sources that can produce stress (e.g. job stress, unsafe school, and so on.), and it has been shown that the hormone cortisol, a bio-marker used to identify the levels of stress, affects health in different ways (e.g. such as mood and anxiety disorders, sleep problems, eating disorders, cardiovascular disease, etc.). Therefore, my interest is to generate a multivariate three-level growth-curve model with random effects of the bio-marker cortisol that helps to understand its changes and its association with stressful jobs. And in order to do it, I will use data from the Whitehall II Study (phases 7 and 9). I will focus in such phases, because around 30% of the cohort who were in employment at phase 7, retired by phase 9, allowing a unique opportunity to examine how a change in life course circumstances such as moving form stressful employment to retirement could have an impact on changes in a person’s diurnal cortisol levels.
