This course examines the gender dimensions of time and change. It approaches time and change in two principal and inter-related ways. Firstly, the module examines age and generation, ideas about growing up and growing old, and debates about childhood and youth in the past and present. The intersection of ‘biographical time’ and ‘historical time’ are also considered in this part of the course. Secondly, the module considers ways in which sociologists can research time and change in people’s lives and draws attention to the temporal aspects of sociological and historical sociological methods. Students will be introduced to the theory and practice of interviewing people about their past experiences (with and without photographs), including debates about memory and photography. Consideration will also be given to debates about the value of photography as biographical and historical record.
This module aims to introduce students to (a) key sociological approaches to time and change and the gender dimension of these; (b) the time, change and gender dimensions of sociological research methods, in particular, oral and life history interviews, and photo elicitation.
By the end of the module students will a) be familiar with key sociological approaches to time and change; b) be able to outline some of the ways in which time and change are socially constructed, organised and experienced and the manner in which these are gendered; c) be able to identify time and change issues raised in interview-based research practice (in particular oral and life history interviews) and the ways in which these are gendered.
Teaching and learning methods
Weekly 2-hour lecture/workshop and 1-hour tutorial/workshop. Both components are compulsory.
Final mark derived from 2 hour examination (50%) and 3,000 word project or essay (50%).
Optional non-assessed essay.
