Our students and alumni share their experiences of studying a Philosophy PhD at Manchester.
Andrew Kirton
After studying Philosophy for 12 years at the University, Andrew is now in a 3-year lectureship at the University of Leeds teaching ethics-in-society topics.
Lydia Farina
Lydia's research focuses on the metaphysics of natural and social kinds and is currently a Teaching Associate a the University of Nottingham.
Finlay Malcolm
Completed his PhD in September 2017, his research concerned the nature of faith, and the relations between faith, belief, unbelief and testimony. He now works as a Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire, on the issues developed in his thesis, with a particular focus on their applicability to religion, culture and identity.
Robert Knowles
Robert Knowles finished his PhD in 2015. He is now a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Leeds, leading the British Academy funded project ‘Mathematics: The Unlikely Engine of Scientific Discovery’.
Moritz Mueller
Moritz completed his PhD in 2014, He is a wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in the Philosophy department at Tübingen, working on a DFG grant application for the project ''Self, Person, Agent: Towards a Unified Picture of Ourselves’
Ben Matheson
Ben is now a Postdoctoral Researcher in Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University, as part of the Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace. He is planning to write a book developing and defending the account of the conditions on moral responsibility (the ‘structural-narrative view’) that he sketched in his PhD thesis.
Hichem Naar
Hichem completed his PhD in 2013. He is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and is working on the nature, value, and normative significance of various attitudes, including the emotions.
Michael Clark
Michael completed his PhD in 2012. Following a position as a research associated on the SNF-funded project ‘Grounding: Metaphysics, Science, and Logic’ at the University of Hamburg, he is now a faculty member within the Graduate School of Human Sciences at Assumption University of Thailand.
Paul Knights
Paul completed his PhD in 2012. He is a postdoctoral researcher at Manchester researching and developing criticisms of features of economic environmental valuation.
Chloë FitzGerald
Chloë completed her PhD in 2011. She is currently a research fellow in the Institute for Ethics, History, and the Humanities at the University of Geneva, and is working on a book for the general public on implicit bias.
