International Business and Commercial Law LLM

Shenali Jashani
Shenali's career path since graduating shows how transferrable the skills are that you gain from studying at Manchester Law School.

Life post the LLM has been pretty varied for me; I loved studying at Manchester and particularly enjoyed studying Law. I, like so many other law grads, thought to pursue a legal career as a commercial/corporate solicitor working for a big City firm.

I actually found it quite hard to get a paralegal job (even with a First in my LLB and a master’s degree!) and then once I’d begun working within the legal sphere found that maybe a legal career wasn’t quite for me after all. Although I should add it was excellent experience and I got a great insight into not just commercial law but how the NHS works as I was a Real Estate Paralegal at Capsticks LLP on secondment at the Department of Health for 18 months.

What I realised I wanted was a career with more variety perhaps with the ability to work on a range of projects across departments, sectors and countries; I wanted to be more client facing and really utilise my outgoing personality; I wanted a job where I wouldn’t be in the office 24/7 with the opportunity to attend exciting meetings and talks and even travel abroad; lastly I really wanted to work for a company that had a great social culture, that was inclusive, diverse and valued a good work/life balance whilst still priding itself on the quality of its services.

I began applying for Graduate Schemes that I believed aligned with these values and quickly found myself applying for Fujitsu UK & Ireland. As one of the largest ICT companies in the world, Fujitsu offers a huge range of opportunities to graduates from all disciplines, whether it is STEM or Humanities and I couldn’t help but be quite excited by the potential projects I could be part of.

Throughout the application process I found myself becoming more and more attracted to the company and every interaction I had with employees reinforced that the work is cutting edge, intellectually stimulating and exciting and all the people were fun, friendly and most of all very supportive and keen to help you fulfil your potential in whatever role you chose.

Since beginning the Graduate Scheme, I have met a range of fantastic people and had the opportunity to meet senior staff from not only Fujitsu but across the public and private sectors. I am currently working on a project with the Home Office providing consultancy for potential solutions using technology to the biggest challenges of Brexit. It has been excellent using my legal background to provide commercial value! I get to enjoy a high level of responsibility whilst still feeling supported and encouraged.

So if you are someone who is looking to be challenged in a dynamic environment, work on exciting projects and have a keen interest in technology I would definitely recommend looking into the several great roles available on the Fujitsu Graduate Scheme!
