Introduction to research ethics
This online course explores issues around research ethics, particularly healthcare research ethics. It is suitable for all healthcare professionals and anyone with an interest in this area. It requires no previous training.
About the course
The course will walk you through the main issues in research ethics, consolidating your study with a summary after each topic, and finish with a short multiple-choice quiz to check on your progress.
This course covers the following issues (in approximately 10 study hours):
- The Current International Research Ethics Framework
- Medical Research and UK Law - including the legal principles governing children and the mentally incapacitated
- Research Ethics Committees - including the role and structure of the Research Ethics Committee and the process of review
- Informed Consent: The Cornerstone of Modern Research Ethics
- Ethical Issues Relating to Medical Research on Vulnerable Participants
- Participation in Research: To pay or not to pay?
- Ethical Issues Relating to the Use of Unethically Obtained Data
- Research Ethics Outside of the Healthcare Field: Ethical Issues in Social Science and Psychology Research
- Research Ethics Outside of the Healthcare Field: Research Ethics Committees and Guidelines in Non-Health Care Areas
Accreditation
While this course is not formally accredited by any professional bodies you should be able to claim CPD credit for the hours you spend studying, including any extra reading you do as part of the course. When completing your CPD profile, your certificate of completion of the course and printouts of the course content can be used as supporting evidence.

The cost of this course is £190, with a discount of 10% available to University of Manchester alumni, as well as significant discounts for block bookings.
