Mike Artis

We are extremely sad to report that Michael Artis, FBA (known as Mike) died on Friday 8th January after a long illness. Mike came to Manchester from University of Wales, Swansea in 1976, where he had been Professor of Applied Economics University of Wales, Swansea (1972-1976).

Whilst at Manchester,  Mike was joint editor of the Economic Journal 1986-1988 and associate editor 1988-1996, elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1988  and a Houblon-Norman Fellow at the Bank of England in 1989/90.  

Mike was also a long-time editor of The Manchester School journal during this period. He then took up a Professorship at the European University Institute, Florence in 1995, before returning to Manchester in 2005 as Professorial Fellow and Director of the Regional Economics Centre.

He retired from the University in 2008, maintaining his research as Honorary Research Fellow in the School until October 2010.
