Politics students witness parliamentary evidence session
23 March 2018
The School of Social Sciences Politics department, along with the University’s policy team, Policy@Manchester, hosted the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee questions to Metro Mayors on Brexit and local government.
The meeting was part of an inquiry examining the concerns of the local government sector ahead of the UK's withdrawal from the EU. The session was an opportunity for our politics students to witness first-hand parliamentary business.
The evidence session was held in the University’s Whitworth Council Chamber, with a witness panel which included Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
Questioning came from several Members of Parliament.
The Committee’s questions focused on the extent to which the Government is engaging with local authorities over Brexit, the effect of losing EU funding streams and changes to workers’ rights, and the potential to devolve EU powers to local government after withdrawal.
