BSocSc Sociology

Penny Harvey

Why did you choose to study on this programme?

Because I love Sociology, there is such a range of things to study and it is so applicable ot everyday life. I feel Sociology is great because it enables an understanding of the world around us and not only why our society is the way it is but how people and organisations have influenced it.

Why did you choose the University of Manchester?

Because it was a really accessible University with a great history for my degree. As not only did it have influence in the origins of the feminist and women’s suffrage movement it was also the industrial capital of England and for a short time hosted Marx and Engles, moreover the union is amazing and there are too many things to get involved in.

What do you like in Manchester as a city?

It’s very centralised and has great transport. There really is something for everyone and such a range of cultures to get involved in; if we had better weather I don’t think I would ever leave.

What has been the highlight of your course so far?

I can’t pick one; I have had so many amazing experiences. The lectures are amazing and opportunities with it are even better. The lecturing staff and Teaching Assistants are all so friendly, helpful and welcoming. I really can’t fault it.

What is it like to study in the school?

Fun, interesting, inspiring, engaging and energetic: just some of the words I could use to describe studying Sociology.

What social/extra curricular opportunities have been opened up for you by studying at the University?

I have been a Sociology representative, peer-mentor, student co-ordinator, General Secretary for the Sociology Society, learnt to rock climb, worked at a summer camp, debating competitions, Amnesty International and challenging orthodox society. All of which are awesome, I will also be taking a semester in Australia next spring.
