Roberta Akpan
BA Politics, Philosophy and Economics
Why did you choose to study on this programme?
I was interested in studying PPE as I saw the opportunity to tailor my degree specifically to my interests and academic strengths. I had studied Politics and Economics at A-Level and I wanted to see how a seeming abstract subject like Philosophy could fit into these subjects.
Why did you choose the University of Manchester?
Being from London, I wanted to study in a place that was big but not as big. I wanted a place where there was a campus and halls close to each other and a strong social side to it. Manchester ticked all those boxes for me.
What do you like in Manchester as a city?
There is always something going on! Frequent buses, the community is welcoming to students and there are opportunities to give back to the city I’m in for three years. People are lovely!
What has been the highlight of your course so far?
I was at a talk about the importance of the social sciences and I asked a question and the lecturer said that the fact that I could ask such an important question in an articulate way was a credit to the University and myself.
What is it like to study in the school?
The School of Social Sciences is a fantastic department to study within because they ensure that no matter what subjects you have studies before PPE you get the most out of it and no-one is left behind.
What social/extra curricular opportunities have been opened up for you by studying at the University?
