Dominykas Broga
BSocSc Politics and International Relations
Why did you choose to study on this programme?
Politics is a fascinating subject, just like beauty. Having certain standards everyone is free to interpret. The discursive analysis of social world as well as striving to understand the surrounding environment in terms of ‘social’ were factors that helped me to make up my mind to study Politics and International Relations, furthermore, rather than being solely interested in individual behaviour, I was more fascinated by questions surrounding the agency of state.
Why did you choose the University of Manchester?
I always thought that studying social sciences properly requires environments with possibility to apply the skills one has learnt practically. Being a big city, Manchester offered rich opportunities. Moreover, the University of Manchester is one of the leading institutions in the research area; therefore I expected to find high quality researchers and lecturers here. Finally my brother was studying in the same university; therefore I decided to follow the ‘family tradition’
What do you like in Manchester as a city?
Manchester is a vibrant city with a lot to offer. It has wide possibilities, excellent social life and a brilliant university almost in the heart of the city. The better question is what not to like in Manchester?
What has been the highlight of your course so far?
The highlight of my course so far was the independent research work which I had to do throughout my second year. Being in control over the topic I wanted to choose and the materials that I wanted to read and analyse, writing this task was of the utmost pleasure.
What is it like to study in the school?
Studying in the School of Social Sciences gives you a feeling of independence. It is up to you to decide how and when to divide your time for vast reading lists and when to devote energy for assignments rather than socials, which the University of Manchester provides plenty of!
What social/extra curricular opportunities have been opened up for you by studying at the University?
The University of Manchester is one of the largest universities in the UK. Naturally it offers a wide range of activities that suit almost every taste of student. I probably could not think of an activity that was not open to me here. If I wanted to get some work experience, university staff were always there to help me, if I thought of an activity I was interested in doing, I just had to look on the University’s societies pages and there were plenty of clubs where I could meet like-minded people.
