BA(Economics and Social Studies) Economics

Mohd Hariz Nazimuddin

Why did you choose to study on this programme?

'BAEcon offers me a wide array of subjects to choose from throughout my course or study. The fact that it was compulsory to take Politics and Social Science modules in my first year had opened my eyes to see the world beyond my specialty. The fact that I began specialising on in my 2nd year had given me the chance to ‘test the waters’ in first year before committing to Economics until I graduate.'

Why did you choose the University of Manchester?

'The University of Manchester offer a perfect mixture between student life and city life. Since it is located 10 minutes from the city I can still live a life as a student, while enjoying the fast-paced city life. The ranking and reputation of the University has also climbed throughout the years which gave me the confidence to pick a good university, which is improving at the same time.'

What do you like in Manchester as a city?

'Manchester is student centred; hence I can see a lot of student offers at the same time. It is not too small nor too big as a city and the transportation system is amazing. It is also culturally diverse and no-one shall feel lonely at any time. There’s always something to do in Manchester.'

What has been the highlight of your course so far?

'I have had the chance to be taught by great lecturers including Dr Denise Osborn, the head of Economics in SoSS. PASS sessions in the second year were really beneficial and because of this I am now becoming a PASS leader myself.'

What is it like to study in the school?

'The school put a huge amount of attention at student feedback and I can see that things are improving throughout the years. SOHOL (the staff office hour booking system) is handy in booking appointments with lecturers, who are always helpful. The staff are also very friendly and supportive.'

What social/extra curricular opportunities have been opened up for you by studying at the University?

'I have been in the BA(Econ) society and Music Society. I am currently a clarinettist in Manchester University Wind Orchestra (MUWO) and I am now a trained PASS leader.'
