School of Social Sciences

Introduction

There is a long tradition in teaching the Social Sciences at Manchester.  A Chair in Political Economy was established in 1854 and politics, social anthropology and sociology have all been taught here for over forty years.

The School is committed to research-led teaching and has a continuing tradition of excellence in research, with the Economics discipline area in the top 10, Politics 4th and Sociology top of their discipline areas in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). As many of our teaching academic member of staff are also directly involved in research our teaching is informed by the most recent developments in each of our discipline areas

Our undergraduates have an extensive portfolio of undergraduate teaching programmes to choose from, including single and joint honours degrees in our constituent disciplines; joint degrees with other Schools in the Faculty of Humanities; and the large interdisciplinary BA in Economic and Social Studies (BA(Econ)).

The BA (Econ) offers an unparalleled range of pathways and options with over 260 course units to choose from across the ten subject areas.  The School is committed to the pursuit of research in a real life setting – and from that point of view, our location in the heart of a major, rapidly changing, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic city, is particularly appropriate
