International entry requirements
The minimum entry requirements for admission to degree programmes within the School of Social Sciences are listed, by country, below. Applicants are reminded that all of the information submitted as part of your UCAS application including your personal statement, academic reference and previous educational achievement is used when we make a decision on your application and that these requirements may vary according to your individual circumstances.

Australia: Our entry requirements vary depending upon the state in which you study. Applicants are invited to contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office directly for more detailed entry requirements for individual states.
Austria: Applicants offering the Reifeprufung-Certificate/Matura are asked to achieve an overall average of 2 with no lower than 2 in English (or IELTS at 6.5 overall, with no lower than 6 in any component).
Azerbaijan: Applicants would be required to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme or achieve one years study at University with a GPA of 4. If completing University study, we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Barbados: We expect applicants to complete the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) with grade 2 in at least six units, including Mathematics and English.
Belgium: Applicants from Belgium are expected to have completed the Certficat d'Enseignment Secondaire Superieur/Diploma van Hoger Secundair Onderwijs with 85/80% overall, depending upon the degree programme applied for, with no lower than 80% in relevant subjects. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Brazil: Applicants are expected to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme.
Bulgaria: Applicants are expected to pass the Diploma za Zaversheno Sredno Obrazovanie with no lower than 5 in any subject. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Canada: Our entry requirements vary depending upon the awarding territory and applicants are invited to contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office directly for more detailed entry requirements for individual territories. With the exception of Quebec, however, we expect students to have completed Grade 12 and to have been awarded a Secondary/High School Diploma or Certificate. Applicants from Quebec are expected to have received their Diplome d'Etudes Collegiales.
People's Republic of China: Applicants from the PRC are expected to have completed their Senior High School Examination and either three GCE A Levels with the appropriate grades or an acceptable UK-based foundation programme.
Columbia: Applicants are expected to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme.
Cyprus: We expect applicants from Cyprus to have completed either the Apolytirion with an overall score of 18+ in addition to two GCE A Levels at Grades AA/AB or 3 GCE A Levels at grades AAB/ABB, depending upon the degree programme applied for.
Czech Republic: Applicants are expected to achieve an overall grade of 2 in the Matura, with no lower than 2 in English. If applicants are not taking English as part of the Matura we would require a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Denmark: We expect applicants to achieve an overall grade of 10 in the Studentereksamen. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Estónia: Applicants are expected to pass at least 10 subjects at grade 5, with no lower than 4 in remaining subjects in the Gumnaasiumi Loputunnistus. We also expect students to pass their State School Leaving Certificate with no lower than 85% in any subject. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. European Baccalaureate: Applicants are expected to achieve 85% overall.
Finland: Applicants from Finland are expected to pass their Matriculation exams with no lower than E in any subject.
France: Applicants are expected to achieve 14.5/14 overall in the French Baccalaureate, depending upon the degree programme applied for. Students studying the Option International Baccalaureate are required to obtain 14/13.5 overall, depending upon the degree programme applied for.
Georgia: Applicants would need to complete either three GCE A Levels with the appropriate grades or an acceptable UK-based foundation programme.
Germany: Applicants would need to achieve the German Abitur with an overall grade of 1.3/1.4, depending upon which degree programme applied for.
Greece: Applicants from Greece are expected to have completed either the Apolytirion of Lykeio with an overall score of 18+ in addition to two GCE A Levels at Grades AA/AB or 3 GCE A Levels at grades AAB/ABB depending upon the degree programme applied for.
Hungary: Applicants are expected to achieve 80% in all subjects, including two subjects at higher maturity level in the Erettsegi vizsga. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Iceland: Applicants are expected to achieve 8/7 overall in the Studentsprof, depending upon the degree programme applied for. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. India: Applicants are expected to achieve 85% overall in Year 12 exams, with no lower than 80% in any subject, including English and Mathematics.
Iran: In conjunction with the Secondary School Leaving Certificate, where applicants must achieve an average of 16 out of 20, students are expected to achieve 18/17 overall in the Pre-University Certificate, depending upon the degree programme applied for, with no lower than 16 in any subject. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Ireland: Applicants are expected to complete the Irish Highers with AAAAB/AAABB, depending upon the degree programme applied for.
Israel: Applicants are expected to pass at least six Level 5 subjects at grade 7 or above in the Israeli Bagrut.
Italy: Applicants are expected to achieve 90% overall in the Diploma di Esame di Stato. Any student not taking English as part of their diploma would need to obtain a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Jamaica: We expect applicants to complete the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) with grade 2 in at least six units.
Japan: Applicants are expected to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme or achieve an Associate Degree or Diploma with grades A/B.
Kazakhstan: Applicants are expected to complete first year University/KIMEP study with a GPA of 4. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Republic of Korea: We normally ask that applicants have completed both the Inmungye Kodßng in addition to either 3 GCE A Levels or an acceptable UK-based foundation programme. Applicants with a relevant Junior College Diploma may also be considered.
Lebanon: Applicants are expected to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme.
Lithuania: Applicants are required to achieve no lower than 85% in State Exams and grades 9 and 10 in School Exams. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Luxembourg: From students expecting to receive the Diplome de Fin d'Etudes Secondaires we would normally ask for 'tres bien' in at leat four subjects and 'bien' in all remaining subjects. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Mexico: In addition to the Bachillerato, we require students to complete an acceptable UK-based foundation programme or first year University study in Mexico.
The Netherlands: We expect applicants to pass the VWO Diploma with no lower than 8 in any subject. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. New Zealand: Applicants are required to complete the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Level 3 Certificate with excellence. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Norway: Applicants are required to pass VVO with 4.7/4.5 overall, depending upon the degree programme applied for, and no lower than 4 in English. Students not studying English as part of the VVO will need to obtain a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Poland: Applicants are expected to pass at least 4 subjects at advanced level in the Polish Matura with 90/85% overall and no lower than 85/80% in any subject, depending upon the degree programme applied for. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Portugal: Applicants are expected to achieve 16 overall in Diploma de Ensino Secundario. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Romania: We normally ask that applicants offering the Diploma de Bacalaureat score no lower than 8 in any subject. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Slovakia: Applicants are expected to achieve 2 overall in the Matura. In addition we also require applicants to have obtained a suitable English Language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with no lower than 6 in any component. Republic of South Africa: Applicants studying the South African Senior Certificate/Matriculation Certificate are required to achieve AAAAB at Higher grade to include English and Mathematics. Students studying the National Senior Certificate are expected to achieve 77776 to include English and Mathematics.
Spain: Applicants are expected to achieve an average of 8 in the Bachillerato.
Sweden: Applicants are required to pass the Fullstandigt Slutbetyg fran Gymnasieskolan with MVG in six subjects, including English and VG in all remaining modules.
Switzerland: Students taking the Federal Maturity Certificate are asked to achieve an overall average of 5, with no lower than 5 in English.
Trinidad and Tobago: We expect applicants to complete the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) with grade 2 in at least six units, including Mathematics and English.
Turkey: The School may consider applications from students offering the Lise Diplomasi from a reputable school providing an overall GPA of 4.00 is achieved. Other applicants will be expected to complete an appropriate UK-based foundation programme. United States of America: Applicants are expected to have taken Advanced Placements. We will consider applicants with first year University study with an overall GPA of 3. In addition, we require students to have achieved SAT II, with 600 in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
