The wide range of programmes and pathways that the School of Social Science provide and the specific and transferable skills that students have developed as a result of these ensure that there is an extensive variety of career opportunities open to our graduates.

Our graduates
Recent Graduates from the School of Social Sciences have gone on to an extensive range of different career areas; these include finance and accounting, with graduates working for companies such as Goldman Sachs, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Royal Bank of Scotland, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Deloitte. Graduates have also gone into teaching and also work in central and local government, including the Department of Work and Pensions, the Department of Health and Manchester City Council. Graduates are also in demand in Media, including organisations such as the BBC.

The Careers Service
The University’s Careers Service has consistently been voted the best in the UK for the last six years and not only helps with career choice and job-hunting, but also helps students develop the kinds of skills and experience employers increasingly demand.
All students and recent graduates of the University of Manchester have access to the Careers Service which has resources and a dedicated team of career advisers that can help guide students through their career options and also help students develop the skills to impress future employers.

- Access to resources such as Vault and online psychometric tests.

Manchester Leadership Programme
The Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP) is a recent innovatory development which helps students understand the importance of leadership and seeks to equip the “leaders of tomorrow” with the skills and knowledge demanded by the leading organisations of today. The award has already received positive feedback from employers and community groups.
The programme is designed to promote the personal development of students and their employability through:
- Teaching the importance of leadership that promotes social, economic and environmental sustainability.
- Giving an insight into some of the key challenges facing 21st-century society.
- Developing skills that employers like to see on CVs such as team working, debating & influencing skills and project management.
Increase students’ confidence in their written communication and analytical thinking skills.
