Vital Signs 1: Researching Real Life
The first Vital Signs was held in September 2008 at the University of Manchester and we enjoyed it so much that we decided that we would hold another.

You can see the programme for Vital Signs 1 on the Real Life Methods website(link opens in new window). (Real Life Methods is the precursor to Realities so the website will look a little different but the spirit is the same.)

- This event had a very positive atmosphere, with space to think. Good to have plenary speakers from a range of disciplines
- This was one of best conferences I have attended. Exciting, stimulating and distinct lack of academic "chest-thumping" made me think about my own research practice and motivations.
- Well structured and interesting - I enjoyed it hugely. Overall a great conference - I hope there will be another one in the future - a great theme
- Excellent conference, Good mix of disciplines, fabulous food - this makes a huge difference to the enjoyability of the conference, as well as wellbeing. Good choice of keynotes. Size of conf was just right, could we have another one next year???
- Standard of papers was amazingly good - quite exceptional. But this really says that there was a wealth of choice and wonderful papers & immense stimulation The conference was run v efficiently - prior information was clear and response to queries was friendly & informative. Atmosphere of conference was positive and supportive, not least because of the way it was run.
- Very well organised. Helpful & pleasant organisers - excellent timekeeping (much appreciated). Much better than average catering. Well done! However, such a pity I couldn't attend more of the papers (obviously not possible or would have required a 2 week conference) a really enjoyable event, well organised and structured. Sessions were coherant and content was very relevant. The event had a really friendly & supportive 'tone' which meant people could engage effectively with ideas and each other. Great conference - very inspiring
- Gave me lots of ideas & insipration & an opportunity to think about difference & unconventional ways of researching which really brings your ideas to life. Lots to learn & think about
(We should point out here that we will be booking the same caterers for Vital Signs 2.)
