Abstract
This paper explores the relevance of ‘class’ and the relationship between class, gender and family in contemporary Norwegian society. It returns to research questions raised by Holter et al (1978) in: “Family in class society”, and compares their findings with a qualitative interview study conducted in 2000. Since these studies were published, both family and gender relations have gone through considerable changes, and it has been questioned whether class has become an outdated concept with little relevance for family life. This paper argues that ‘class’ is still a fruitful concept to understand differences between families. The paper also discusses the changing character of class, gender relations and family life.
