Visiting Research Associate at Manchester in 2010Between September and December 2010, Irina Ciorneii will be a visiting research associate at the Manchester Jean-Monnet-Centre of Excellence. She is currently a PhD student in Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where she works on citizenship, migration and transnationalism. The topic of her thesis is related to the local and transnational political incorporation of second country nationals, with an applied case study of the British and Romanian migrants in Spain. The thesis aims to analyze the concept of European citizenship both as a normative construct and a political process. Although most of the studies related to the EU citizenship focus on its emergence and legal aspects, her interest is to see how it takes place in situ, i.e in the places of residence of EU citizens who moved to another country of the Union. Another aspect that the thesis takes into account is the transnational political practices of Romanians and Britons in Spain. Through this she tries to understand how these are intertwined with the processes of local political incorporation. She considers that EU citizenship and political transnationalism is an unexplored link, although the transnational lenses are already a commonplace in the migration literature.
