Visiting Research Associate at Manchester in 2010

Between September and December 2010, Irina Ciorneii will be a visiting research associate at the Manchester Jean-Monnet-Centre of Excellence. She is currently a PhD student in Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where she works on citizenship, migration and transnationalism. The topic of her thesis is related to the local and transnational political incorporation of second country nationals, with an applied case study of the British and Romanian migrants in Spain. The thesis aims to analyze the concept of European citizenship both as a normative construct and a political process. Although most of the studies related to the EU citizenship focus on its emergence and legal aspects, her interest is to see how it takes place in situ, i.e in the places of residence of EU citizens who moved to another country of the Union. Another aspect that the thesis takes into account is the transnational political practices of Romanians and Britons in Spain. Through this she tries to understand how these are intertwined with the processes of local political incorporation. She considers that EU citizenship and political transnationalism is an unexplored link, although the transnational lenses are already a commonplace in the migration literature.

Creating the Cosmopolitan City:
Manchester Migrants Old and New

The project aims to initiate a dialogue among and between academic and non-academic partners on the contribution of migration (past and present) to the shaping of the cosmopolitan city. It takes Manchester as a case study of an old industrial and commercial centre which owes much of its urban regeneration and creative energy to successive waves of migration. Through historical and cross-cultural comparative analyses, the project aims to inform future EU policy on migration with robust empirical and theoretically elaborated research into the historical complexity and future potential of migrants to participate in urban restructuring and rebranding.. Still to be explored, despite extensive EU policy debates on migration within and into the EU are the ways in which synergies of migrants and natives contribute to a city’s ability to reinvent itself as a dynamic hub of knowledge, creative industries and cultural exchange that comprise contemporary cosmopolitan urban centres.

The project will address the impact of the following in shaping today’s Manchester:

  • Migration flows and migrant populations in their historical and contemporary dimensions.
  • EU policy on borders, migration and integration.
  • Migrant contributions to artistic, commercial and political urban restructuring (creativity, representation, attraction of transnational investment, industries, corporate headquarters, global talent)

Target Groups:

  • Academics
  • City Council
  • Community organisations
  • Migrant business associations
  • Urban developers and promoters
  • Representatives of knowledge and creative industries
  • EU representation at local government level
