Postgraduate taught study
Taught study in sociology at Manchester
We offer two programmes at Masters level - the MSc in Sociological Research and the MA in Sociology, the latter is also available at Postgraduate Diploma level. All taught programmes are available on a full or part time basis.
All our programmes consist of 8 courses. In 2011-12 seventeen courses are on offer by Sociology staff and students can also take optional units from across the School of Social Sciences. Students proceeding to a Masters degree also do a dissertation.
Our postgraduate taught programmes provide the very best in research training drawing on the knowledge and experience of staff who are world-leading researchers. Our MSc in Sociological Research is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as providing the quality of training necessary for PhD study. We also offer a wide range of courses that tackle issues in modern societies from 'Culture, Modernity & Media', the 'Sociology of Art' and 'Religion, Militancy and Terror', to 'New Developments in Theories of Gender & Sexuality', the 'Sociology of Consumption' and 'Protest and Progress'.
Each student, whether full or part-time, is allocated a personal tutor and a dissertation supervisor if doing a Masters. It is this level of personal support that ensures our students attain the highest standards. Our students also enjoy access to a world-class library and computer facilities 24 hours a day every day of the year and are encouraged to participate in Sociology research seminars, reading groups and conferences.
