Social Statistics

Schickard Machine

Welcome to Social Statistics which became a separate discipline area within the School of Social Sciences on 1 January 2009. We are committed to high quality research, innovative teaching methods and collaboration with other disciplines within the university, to improve the methodological rigour and range of quantitative enquiries in social science.

Members of our group also belong to the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) or to the Institute for Social Change (ISC). In both these research centres, the focus is on empirical research on topics that span the social sciences, often using sophisticated statistical methods on large and complex datasets and with relevance to social policy at both national and local levels.

Advanced skills in data analysis and research are at the heart of social research, policy making across government and consultancy. Our research, along with colleagues in Sociology, was rated joint first in the last Research Assessment Exercise, with the highest proportion of research judged to be "world leading" of any UK higher education institution.
