Editing course
Sunday 12 June - Wednesday 22 June 2011
This course will be primarily focused on editing. Over ten days, participants will receive regular editorial advice as they cut a 15-20 minute film, or part of a film, out of a maximum of 8 hours of material that they have shot, logged and paper-edited prior to the beginning of course.
Participants will be invited to produce their own material though we can also supply appropriate rushes to those who do not have their own. In either case, we will supply instructional notes about how to prepare these rushes for editing. Participants who have taken the Introductory course may wish to use the interlude of nine days between the courses to shoot their own rushes. In this case, the Granada Centre will supply production equipment at no extra cost.
Editing software and workshops
For the duration of the course, each participant will be allocated their own edit suite equipped to a professional offline standard, with a system based on the latest version of Final Cut Pro, or if preferred, Avid Media Composer software. This training will also be appropriate for the use of Adobe Premiere Pro.
Although the objective will be to arrive at a final product that is relatively polished, the principal aims will be to provide participants with opportunities, through active engagement in editing their own material
- to master both visual and aural aspects of shot-by-shot transitions
- to learn how to structure a coherent and engaging documentary film narrative
- to be introduced to basic features of titling, subtitling, colour correction, sound-mixing and, if appropriate to their work, the formulation and performance of voice-over narration.
The course will run from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and on the Saturday with, on some evenings, additional screenings and analyses of documentary films that are of particular interest from an editorial point of view. There will be all-day screenings of participants’ work midway through the course and on the last day.
Participants who shoot their own rushes will be expected to provide themselves with tapes, but once the course has begun, there are no additional materials costs.
