Equipment
All the production equipment that students require for training purposes is provided by the Granada Centre. The standard film-making kit issued to students is based on professional equipment:
- the Sony HVR-V1, a lightweight HDV camcorder
- the Rode NTG-1 directional microphone and the Sennheiser EVO110 radio microphone.
In addition, students on the Sensory Media pathway are provided with
- digital SLR cameras (primarily the Nikon DM3000 and the Samsung GSX-1)
- professional Marantz PMD661 digital sound recorders.
All this equipment is maintained by the Granada Centre's own audiovisual technician
The Granada Centre also has its own Film Library, containing over 2000 titles including a 'Masterworks Collection', which includes most of the classics of ethnographic film history. Many of these titles may be borrowed, but there are also viewing facilities in the immediate vicinity of the library. Read more.
Equipment costs
In order to use this equipment, students pay a graduated series of 'bench fees', on top of the normal postgraduate tuition fee. The level of bench fee charged is dependent upon the proportion of hands-on instruction in the particular degree or pathway that students have chosen.
Once they have paid this initial fee, they have access to this equipment throughout the year without any additional cost. However, they do have to cover the costs of tapes and other consumables (no more than around £250 per year) as well as any travel and subsistence expenses that they might incur whilst carrying out their projects.
