Undergraduate
Social Anthropology at Manchester offers an exciting and diverse range of courses which give students an excellent grounding in the discipline and take them to the cutting edge of research in social anthropology. Manchester’s reputation of being an innovator in social anthropology is reflected in students’ learning experiences.
The programme now offers the opportunity to study a year abroad with the introduction of International Study. Students may be able to apply to one of our partner universities in the third year of their studies. This offers the chance to gain a practical cross-cultural experience of another student culture, as well as acquiring knowledge, through experience and participation, of the society in which it is embedded.
Since its inception in 1981, the BSocSc degree has consistently attracted high quality students, from a wide variety of backgrounds. This quality, combined with the dedication and enthusiasm of staff and students alike, has resulted in a catalogue of superb degree results. Social Anthropology enjoys close links between staff and students, and the wellbeing of students is of paramount importance. In addition to the BSocSc degree, there are other degree programmes that allow students to combine social anthropology courses with other interests. In short, Manchester is an excellent place to study anthropology.
Another excellent degree programme on offer is the BA Hons Archaeology and Anthropology. This brings together the study of Archaeology and Anthropology, providing a comprehensive knowledge of the diversity of cultural, social and material aspects of human existence in prehistoric, historical and contemporary contexts. It has both regional and global scope, focusing on particular peoples and areas, while considering much wider issues, including past and current processes of globalisation. Regional specialisms in Archaeology include prehistoric Europe and the near East, Islamic East Africa, Colonial Australia and the Classical world; in Anthropology, they include the Pacific, Melanesia, South Asia, Eastern, Southern and Western Europe, East Africa, the Andes, and Latin America.
