Study abroad programme

Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to see the world, experience new cultures and study at one of Manchester's world-class partner institutions.

Why study abroad?

It really is the opportunity of a lifetime. There are many benefits to studying abroad

How does it work?

There are two possible ways of including study abroad as part of your Social Anthropology degree programme

Where can you go?

Within Europe, you can go to one of the following Universities with which Social Anthropology has an established relationship:

These visits are supported financially through the EU-funded ERASMUS scheme (see the section below, 'Who pays for study abroad?' for further details on funding).

If you prefer to go outside Europe, you can go to one of the University's 'worldwide partnership' institutions. However, you should note that in this case, there is considerably less funding available (again, see below, 'Who pays?')

A full list of partner institutions is available on the University Study Abroad website. To help you with your selection, in Social Anthropology, we have a number of 'preferred' partners outside Europe with whom we have already established contact, including:

Who pays for study abroad?

If you are accepted to study at one of the European partner universities, the ERASMUS scheme will provide you with a certain degree of financial support, including:

If you go for one semester only, whether in Europe or outside of it, you will not have to pay any fees at the partner university, but you will have to pay your University of Manchester fees.

If you go for the full year, i.e. under the BSocSc in Social Anthropology with International Study programme, the current arrangement for European exchanges is that the UK government will cover your University of Manchester fees and you will still not have to pay any fees at the partner university. However, this arrangement is currently under review.

If you go to one of the partner institutions outside Europe, you have to continue to pay fees at Manchester whilst you are abroad. Fees range from £0-£3,000 and are dependent on assessed household income. Under present arrangements you pay considerably less than the fees normally paid by UK students back in Manchester. Also, although there are no automatic grants to cover costs, there are a number of competitive scholarships for which you may apply.
