Project workshops

The project, phase 1, involved three workshops in Latin America (Brazil, Mexico and Colombia) and a final symposium held in Manchester. The second phase has one workshop in Mexico in April 2012 and a final symposium in Manchester, in January 2013.

The phase 1 final project symposium was on 7-8 July 2011. Click here for more details.

Brazil. This workshop was held in Rio de Janeiro, 28-29 May 2010. It consisted of an "open session" in the morning of the 28th May, to which about 20 local academics and postgraduate students were invited. The rest of the workshop consisted of the team and a smaller number of invited guests, discussing the comparative dimensions of the project, plus a project planning meeting. Mexico. The second project workshop was held in the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, 26-27 August 2010. It began with an all-day "open session" on 26 August, which attracted a mixed audience of over 80 people. These included academics from three faculties (including science) and five different research centres in UNAM, plus academics from 13 other institutions. These included geneticists and biologists - and Dr Alessandra Carnevale, the director of research at the national genomics institute, INMEGEN. A representative from the National Institute of Indigenous Languages was also present, as was one indigenous activist (Zapotec). Click here for a workshop programme.

Journalists from UNAM’s Revista Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales, the Gaceta UNAM and the national daily La Jornada also attended. The Revista Humanidades later published an interview with Peter Wade and Vivette Garcia on the project, while Vivette Garcia published an article in La Jornada. Gaceta UNAM ran a short piece, and national daily El Financiero also published an interview with Carlos López Beltrán.

Colombia. The third project workshop was held in the Universidad Pontificia Javeriana in Bogotá, 8-11 December 2010. It began with a half-day "open session" on 9 December, which attracted a mixed audience of nearly 70 people. Of these about half were social sciences academics and students, about 20 were scientists (mainly in genetics) and the rest were from varied backgrounds (education, music, film, journalism, psychology, theology). About 25 people were students. One journalist was present, from the Revista Escarabeo, a literary review. Click here for a workshop programme.
