PhD in Social Anthropology funding opportunities
Please note: the deadline for applying for all these opportunities is 1 March each year. You can apply for all relevant awards by filling in a single form. More details. You have to apply for admission to the PhD programme as a separate process: most people apply using the University's on-line application system.
- Social Anthropology at Manchester has at least 2 Graduate Teaching Studentships available for PhD students, starting in September each year. These grants cover home fees and include a maintenance grant.
- From September 2011, ESRC postgraduate training funding will be organised through the new ESRC Doctoral Training Centres (DTCs). Manchester is part of the new North West DTC, which has 63 studentships to award per year and includes the universities of Liverpool and Lancaster. Social Anthropology is a recognised training pathway in the NWDTC. This funding is for UK and EU students only. UK students receive fees and maintenance funds; EU students receive a fees-only grant. These awards can include an MA training year. The deadline for funding applications to be made to the DTC has not yet been fixed but is liekly to be in March 2012. Applicants to Social Anthropology programmes who want to be considered for DTC funding should adhere to the School application deadline of 1 MARCH 2012. More detailed information about the DTC and the allocation and application process can be found by clicking here.
- The North West DTC also has a Language-Based Area Studies (LBAS) pathway, which is inter-disciplinary and can include social anthropology students who plan to work on Latin America and the Caribbean, the Arab World, and Russia and Eastern Europe (subject to the availability of appropriate supervision). Such applicants should apply for a place on a Social Anthropology programme and adhere to the 1 March deadline. The LBAS pathway has a specific allocation of up to three studentships.
- Applicants can also be considered for University funding opportunities such as the Alumni Fund PhD studentships, the Postgraduate Research Endowment Fund studentships (which are not available every year) and Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust awards.
- Overseas candidates (non-EU) will also be considered for the International Research Students Awards, given by the School of Social Sciences. These awards cover the difference between home and overseas fees. They may be held in conjunction with other awards (for example, ones which only cover home fees).
For more details on all these grants and how to apply, please visit the SoSS postgraduate funding page. See also the North West DTC webpages.
Also visit the University's postgraduate funding database, where you can enter data specific to your enquiry and see details of other awards, such as the 9/11 Scholarship Fund, or the British Marshall Scholarship - in some cases, eligibility is restricted to certain categories of applicants and, in most cases, applicants will apply directly to the organisation managing these awards, not to the University of Manchester.
