Exchange Scheme with Peking University, China

Starting this year, Politics has begun an exchange scheme with Peking University. Peking University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, and is highly regarded for its research in the arts and social sciences. In addition to providing library facilities, affiliation with Peking University is likely to open doors to other contacts, as faculty often serve as advisors to the government, and are well-connected with the policy-makers. The exchange student will be hosted by the Department of Political Economy, School of Government.

At present, the arrangements for the scheme are as follows.

Eligibility: there is currently one place available for the exchange scheme. There are, however, no specific entry requirements.

Facilities: the exchange student will be given access to the library and internet facilities at the University. In addition, the Department of Political Economy will provide the student with office space.

Supervision: at present, no formal supervision is available. The Peking faculty may be able to offer some advice on the student’s research, but this will be subject to their availability, and it is up to the exchange student to make initial contact.

Costs: under the agreement, Peking University will waive tuition fees. There will, however, be a modest fee to get library and internet access, which must be paid for by the student. The student is also responsible for meeting his/her own travel and accommodation costs.

Accommodation: the student must make his/her own arrangements for accommodation. The University does have some dormitories for foreign students, and private accommodation is also available.

Deadline for application: there is currently no specific deadline for the application. However, students are advised to avoid applying during the Chinese New Year holidays (around February) and the summer holidays.

Contact: Students who wish to apply should contact Associate Professor Zhu Tianbiao, who can be reached at tianbiao@pku.edu.cn. Shogo Suzuki is the liaison person for this scheme at Manchester, who can be reached at Shogo.Suzuki@manchester.ac.uk.
