On Fabre's 'Cosmopolitan War'

The Manchester Centre for Political Theory (MANCEPT) is delighted to host a conference on Professor Cécile Fabre's forthcoming book, Cosmopolitan War (Oxford University Press). The book provides a series of incisive and challenging arguments regarding cosmopolitan principles for just war. Fabre argues for unconventional views regarding wars of national self-defence, humanitarian interventions, subsistence wars, civil wars, mercenaries, the use of human shields in wartime, and other important issues in the ethics of war and warfare.

Religion and Right-Wing Extremism in Contemporary Europe

Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in organised extremism, whether in the guise of electorally resurgent extreme right-wing parties such as the British National Party (BNP), or religiously inspired terrorism. However we still know little about the interplay between these different forms of extremism, or more specifically the role of religion in support for movements on the extremist fringe. For example, what is the relationship between religiosity and support for parties on the extreme right-wing? How do these parties use religion in their electoral campaigns? Why and how do some citizens come to be actively involved in radical and violent Islamist groups?
