The University of Manchester in one of Britain’s largest universities, with an international reputation across the range of scholarly disciplines. The University’s main campus is located a short distance from the city centre. Manchester is one of the great European cities. Its architecture represents a high point of Victorian achievement and the modern city is a major centre of banking, commerce and manufacturing. With several universities located here, it caters to a very large student population. Manchester has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and its cultural and sporting life are internationally renowned. Within fifteen minutes walk of the campus there exist three outstanding professional theatre companies, the halls of the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic orchestras as well as venues for jazz, rock and other musics, a vigorous club scene, the Cornerhouse and other cinemas, and Europe’s fastest-growing Chinatown. Ten minutes in the opposite direction is perhaps the best stretch of road in the entire country for Indian and Pakistani food.
Only a little further away is Old Trafford, a venue for Test cricket and the home to Manchester United. The Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester in 2002, and new sports facilities have been constructed. The on campus Commonwealth pool offers world-class swimming facilities. Housing is varied, plentiful and, by English standards, moderately priced. Schooling ranges from world-famous private schools to excellent sixth-form colleges and comprehensives. Manchester is served by a major international airport and excellent train connections in every direction. Some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe is about thirty minutes drive from the University, in the Peak District National Park, while the Lake District and Snowdonia are also within easy reach.
