Philosophy of Science & Mathematics

Philosophers at Manchester work in varied range of topics within the philosophy of science and mathematics. Thomas Uebel has interests in the philosophy of science of Mach, Poincare, Duhem, Rey and the logical empiricists, and also in the scientific realism debate. Chris Daly has research interests in a number of areas in philosophy of science, especially as they overlap with issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of language. Ann Whittle is interested in a number of topics within the philosophy of science, and has written on the laws of nature. John O'Neill has written extensively on the philosophy of economics, an interest shared with Thomas Uebel, who also works on the philosophy of social science generally. Cynthia Macdonald works on the nature of explanation in the special sciences: she shares with Michael Scott and Joel Smith an interest in the philosophy of psychology.

Much of David Liggins' work is within the philosophy of mathematics: he is particularly interested in providing an attractive fictionalist alternative to platonist accounts of mathematics. Chris Daly also works on fictionalism, about mathematics and other areas. The relation between theism and mathematical realism was the subject of a recent joint paper by Michael Scott and Graham Stevens.
