Philosophy of Mind & Psychology

Manchester has a number of philosophers with research interests in both the philosophy of mind and the philosphy of psychology. Catherine Abell has research interests in the nature of representation. Sean Crawford has research interests in intentionality and propositional attitudes. He also works on sensory experience in Descartes. Michael Scott works on the nature of perception and the individuation of the senses. Joel Smith has research interests in self-knowledge, knowledge of other minds and the nature of perceptual experience. He has also written on bodily awareness and the imagination. Thomas Smith works on the various issues concerning social groups, including the nature of joint intention and agency. Ann Whittle works on the metaphysics of mind and has written on the problem of mental causation. Cynthia Macdonald also works on mental (and higher-level) causation, in addition to investigating the nature of explanation in psychology and the other special sciences.

Manchester is also home to MANCEV, a hub for research into the emotions and their relation to both aethetic and ethical value.
