Ethics

Philosophers at Manchester work on a diverse range of topics in ethics. John O’Neill’s many interests in ethics include environmental ethics and intellectual property rights. Michael Scott works on expressivist theories of moral and religious discourse. David Liggins also works on metaethical questions, with interests in moral realism and anti-realism. Thomas Smith has written on collective obligation.

Michael Scott and postdoctoral research fellow Michiru Nagatsu were recently involved in the SCI research project Motivations of Indifference, along with our late colleague Peter Goldie.

Manchester is also home to MANCEV, a hub for research into the emotions and their relation to both aesthetic and ethical value.
