Epistemology

Several members of the Manchester department work on epistemology. Thomas Uebel works on several topics: epistemic justification, scepticism, a priori knowledge, and social epistemology, in addition to his historical studies. Joel Smith’s research in this area concentrates on self-knowledge and our knowledge of other minds. Ann Whittle has written on the claim that we can have no knowledge of the intrinsic natures of properties. Catharine Abell studies the epistemic standing of pictures, in work that responds to recent developments in aesthetics. Other members of staff with interests in this area are Chris Daly (the notion of acquaintance), and David Liggins (epistemological arguments against abstract objects).
