Research degree programme details
Our research degree programmes comprise:
- PhD/MRes; four-year programme with the possibility of direct entry into year two.
- MPhil in Economics; two-year programme.
PhD/MRes programme: overview
The doctoral programme in Economics is a four-year programme, with the possibility of direct entry into year two of the four. Year one will entail one of our well-established Masters courses (MSc Economics, MSc Econometrics, MSc Economics &Econometrics, MSc Financial Economics). Year two consists of advanced PhD level coursework and preparation of a detailed research proposal; direct entry into year two requires a prior Masters degree of appropriate standard and content, such as at least a merit (minimum 60% average) from one of the Manchester degrees mentioned above, or equivalent from elsewhere. Research is full-time in years three and four, leading to submission of the thesis at the end of year four (although extensions into a fifth year for “writing up” are possible). Upon successful completion of the programme (whether entering in year one or two), degrees of PhD and MRes will be awarded. Please read the Postgraduate Prospectus for further details.

Research interests of staff
Research interests and recent publications of members of staff are available on the web and highlight the diversity of areas in which we can provide expert supervision. Our research is organized into five Research Area Groups.
It is anticipated that you will be affiliated to one of these RAGs and work in an area close to research interests of supervisors. Further details on members of staff and their research areas can be found on the staff pages of the Economics website.
Each member of staff has provided information on the areas in which they are prepared to supervise PhD students at PhD areas webpage.
Before applying for PhD/MRes, you are strongly advised to seek information on the ongoing research here in Economics. Apart from the web pages mentioned above, two other links useful in this regard are the pages listing information on the research of both our current PhD students and also some of our recent PhD graduates.
