Teaching

PhD Topic - International Trade and FDI: Impact and Implications for Developing Nations

Swati's research looks at the relationship between International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective, with a particular focus on the role of overseas investments in complementing exports.

Theoretically, it examines the degree to which trade can be thought to lead to FDI as opposed to the relationship running in the other direction. Empirically, it involves micro level analysis to test the relationship, in particular, evaluating the relationship − whether FDI complements or substitutes trade − using firm level databases.

The research further extends to assess the related issue of the impact of openness to trade and investment on economic growth. Her study is mainly focussed on two countries, India and Brazil, in order to carry out an in-depth qualitative and quantitative assessment covering a wide range of country-specific issues.
