Woojin Kang
Background
Woojin is currently a PhD student in Development Economics being jointly supervised by Dr. Katsushi Imai and Prof. Chris Orme, specialising in poverty and vulnerability analysis based on household surveys. Having completed his BA Business Administration at Rikkyo University (Tokyo/Japan), he came to the University of Manchester where took the Postgraduate Diploma in Development Economics (2003) and the MSc in Economics (with merit) (2004). After working in industry, he returned to the University of Manchester to follow the PhD programme. He was awarded a joint scholarship of Universities of Manchester, Nottingham and Warwick for the MSc Degree and the Manchester School Scholarship in 2007.
Current Activities
Research
The main topic of his PhD research is a microeconometric analysis of households poverty and vulnerability in rural Vietnam drawing upon five rounds of Vietnam Household Surveys. Apart from his own research, Woojin (with K. Imai) is currently involved in the joint project of Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC) and Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), which is on poverty and vulnerability in China. He is also interested in microfinance and programme evaluation.A paper on his research (jointly with K. Imai and R. Gaiha) has been published as a Discussion Paper (EDP-0708) and has been submitted to the journal Applied Economics. His research outputs have been presented at several international conferences as well as at departmental workshops in both the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield.
