Abdilahi Gurhan

Background

Abdi is currently a PhD student in Economics under the joint supervision of Dr. Bernard Walters and Dr Katsushi Imai. Having received his BSc. in 2003 from Aarhus University, Denmark, he spent almost two years working at the Department of Education and Cultural Affairs, Aalborg City Council, Denmark.

After a short spell working for an NGO in East Africa, he came to Manchester to pursue the Diploma in Development Economics. He then progressed to the MSc. in Development Economics which he gained in 2007, with distinction. His MSc. dissertation, supervised by Prof Colin Kirkpatrick, was entitled "The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment and Aid on the Economic Performance of Uganda: 1980-2004". Following his MSc, he briefly worked as a junior economist for a research centre based in Aarhus, Denmark.

Current Activities

Research interests

Abdi is mainly interested in issues relating to financial development and liberalisation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the dynamics of capital flows and how these impact on the economic performance of SSA countries.

His current PhD research examines the inter-linkages between financial liberalisation, capital flight and economic growth in SSA
Abdi is a member of the Development Economics and Policy Research Area Group within Economics, School of Social Sciences and he is a recipient of SoSS Scholarship.

Teaching

Abdi is a Teaching Assistant for the courses: "Principles of Microeconomics (ECON10041)" and "Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON10042)".
