Postgraduate Funding in Economics: 2007 Admissions
There are a number of funding opportunities available for postgraduate study in Economics.
1. ESRC Funding
Awards from the ESRC are available in amopunts that vary by nationality (see the ESRC website for all details/forms). There are of 2 types "1+3" (providing for 1 year Masters followed by 3 years PhD) and "+3" (providing for 3 years PhD). Students wishing to commence such a programme in September 2007 should consult the discipline area of Economics and its links, and contact us as soon as possible.
2. MSc Funding
Please note that there is no funding available for standalone MSc programmes. ESRC "1+3" funding is available for eligible students. You will need to
- (a) Apply for a place on the University of Manchester MSc programme in Economics or Economics & Econometrics.
- (b) Complete the ESRC open competition application form for a "1+3" award.
We need to receive (b) by March 28th 2007 at the latest and it is strongly advisable to make first contact with us as soon as possible before this.
3. PhD Funding
For students who wish to pursue, beginning September 2007, the three-year PhD programme, a number of awards will be available (other than ESRC) of varying types and level of financial support, funded from various sources within the University of Manchester, including SoSS and the Economics discipline area. The most valuable of these is the “Research Scholarship” next is the “Research Studentship” and finally there are “Bursaries”. The precise descriptions are as follows.
3.1 Research Scholarships
Successful applicants will receive, per annum for the 3-year PhD registration period (subject to satisfactory progress):
- A maintenance grant of £10,500
- A waiver of the home (UK) tuition fees (£3,240)
- £750 for research skills support
Successful applicants will be supported either as a result of success in the SoSS competition for such awards, or via funding from the Economics Studies discipline area. Please note that the Scholarship award is close in value to that provided by ESRC for UK students, and we require that UK and EU students also apply to the ESRC (“+3”) national competition.
However, our awards are open to any nationality.
3.2 Research Studentships
Successful applicants will receive, per annum for the 3-year PhD registration (subject to satisfactory progress):
- A maintenance grant of £6,000
- A waiver of the home (UK) tuition fee (£3,240)
3.3 Bursaries
These are more variable. Successful candidates will receive, per annum for the 3-year PhD registration (subject to satisfactory progress) a maintenance grant, with no fee waiver. Tthe value of a bursary will not exceed that of a Research Studentship.
3.4 Application procedure and deadlines
If you are eligible and wish to apply for an ESRC "+3" award you will need to:
- (a) Apply for a place on the University of Manchester PhD programme in Economics.
- (b) Complete the ESRC open competition application form for a “+3” award
We need to receive (b) by March 28th, 2007 at the latest and it is strongly advisable to make first contact with us as soon as possible before this.
If you wish to be considered for a Research Scholarship, Research Studentship or Bursary, then you need to apply for a place on the University of Manchester PhD programme in Economics by 1st June, 2007. Again it is strongly advisable to make first contact with us as soon as possible before this.
We expect to make some decisions in April, others in June. In all cases you will receive feedback from us by mid-July at the very latest.
Please note
- (i) The competition for all these awards is strong, and in order to be a credible applicant you will need to have, or expect to have, a Master’s degree in Economics or closely related subject which is equivalent to MSc with distinction (or reasonably close to it) in a Manchester MSc.
- (ii) As well as your academic achievements in (i) a second criterion (for both PhD admission and funding decisions) will be the proximity of your research topic to those of available supervisors; you are strongly advised to consult our PhD Areas and Topics web pages.
- (iii) Existing Manchester PhD student without awards may also be considered for awards to begin in their second or third year.
