- Richard Agenor will be presenting a series of 4 lectures with the following title "Banking Crises: Causes, Evidence, and Regulatory Response." These two hour lectures are timetabled to take place at 12 noon on the four days starting Monday 23rd March and ending on the 27th March 2009.
- In January 2009, the paper "Strategies of Survival in Dynamic Asset Market Games" by Rabah Amir, Igor Evstigneev and Le Xu (Research Paper No. 08-41, Swiss Finance Institute, December 2008) was listed on SSRN's Top Ten download list for the subject "Econometric & Statistical Methods - Special Topics"
- Doctoral Conference: This year's Economics PhD-Student Conference took place on 6 & 7 May 2008.
Research:
Research Assessment Exercise 2008:
The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), confirm that we are in the top 10 of UK Economics Departments with international recognition for the quality of ALL our research activity. Of this:
- 80% achieved the highest standards of international excellence (3*/4*)
- 25% is world-leading (4*).
The research activity of 41 of Manchester's economists (38 within the Discipline Area) was submitted to RAE2008, including staff entered under the Development Studies or Business & Management submission, where 65% of the research activity was judged 3*/4*. In total, 90% of the research eligible staff were entered.
The RAE2008, summarises the percentage of research activity in each of 5 bands (4*, 3*, 2*, 1* & Unclassified) where:
- 4* describes work demonstrating levels of originality, significance and rigour which are comparable to the best work in the field or sub-field; i.e., world leading.
- 3* describes work demonstrating international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
- 2* describes work demonstrating quality that is internationally recognised in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
- 1* describes work demonstrating quality that is nationally recognised in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
- Unclassified describes work falling below the standard of nationally recognised work, or failing to meet the definition of research, as set by the RAE.
The Research Quality Profile for Economics research at Manchester is:
