About Economics
Our physical location on the campus of the University of Manchester is the 3rd floor of the new building named after one of Manchester's Nobel laureates in economics, Sir Arthur Lewis. The Arthur Lewis Building is no. 36 on the Campus Map.
The modern Economics Discipline Area is one of the largest Economics "departments" in the UK, with an academic staff of over 50 (including sixteen Professors), and is recognised as a leading centre for economics research and research-led teaching across all aspects the discipline. The RAE2008 results confirm that all our research is internationally recognised with 80% of our activity meeting the highest standards of international excellence or world leading (3*/4*).
In March 2001 the teaching and learning provision in Economics were scrutinised by an external panel of subject specialists. As a result, the Quality Assurance Agency judged Economics to be excellent and awarded us a maximum score of 24/24.
Economics is contributing to several undergraduate programmes in economics and the social sciences, including our own Economics Specialist degree, the Bachelor of Economic Science (BEconSc-Economics). Our Postgraduate Study programmes in Economics, Econometrics and Economics & Finance are all ESRC-recognised and the wide range of research interests and experise of our academics provides many opportunities for Postgraduate Research Training .
