Economics at Manchester

The Economics discipline area enjoys a distinguished reputation for its research and teaching across all areas of the subject. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise place us in the top 10 of UK Economics Departments with 80% of our research achieving the highest standards of international excellence (3*/4*), and 25% being classed as world-leading (4*).  Three Nobel prize winners (Sir John Hicks, Sir Arthur Lewis and Professor Joseph Stiglitz) have worked at Manchester. 

At Manchester we teach economics to a large number of students across a diverse range of degree programmes and levels of study from first year undergraduates to advanced research students. We are also part of the largest ESRC Doctoral Training Centre in England.  According to the National Student Survey 2010, we produced the most undergraduates satisfied with their programme of study of any economics department in the UK. The 2011 survey confirmed this position and saw our overall satisfaction score improve relative to the rest of the elite Russell Group and the sector as a whole.

The Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) has awarded the 2012 AARES ‘Quality of Research Discovery Award’ to a paper co-authored by Dan Rigby.

At the invitation of the Central Bank of Western African States, Professor Agénor will present his new book, "Public Capital, Growth and Welfare" on May 2nd in Dakar (Senegal). The conference will be open to the public.

Economic modelling predicts that football fans could suffer as a result of UEFA Financial Fair Play rules.

The Royal Economic Society Annual Conferences in 2014 & 2015 will be held in Manchester.
