Postgraduate study in Sociology at Manchester

Sociology at Manchester offers a vibrant and exciting research culture within which to undertake postgraduate study.  We are one of the leading research units in the country, and at the forefront of British and international Sociology. In the 2008 national Research Assessment Exercise, we were ranked joint first for Sociology in the country:  85% of our research was judged of international standard, with 60% classed as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. We are also one of the largest centres for Sociology in Britain with 27 academic staff and over 80 postgraduate students. Our students are from across the UK and around the world; some come straight from undergraduate degrees, many are consolidating careers or taking career breaks.

We offer two programmes at Masters level - the MSc in Sociological Research and the MA in Sociology, the latter is also available at Postgraduate Diploma level.

For students interested in doing a PhD we offer two pathways. If you already have a good Masters degree you can apply to do a 3 year PhD.  Alternatively, if you have a very good first degree you can register for our 1 + 3 programme which includes a 1 year MSc in Sociology followed by a 3 year PhD.

Whether postgraduate study is to develop a career, prepare the way for a PhD or meet personal objectives, Manchester Sociology has something for you.
